We have an exciting opportunity for a limited number of teachers to visit the University of Oklahoma’s Deep Dust drill site near Burns Flat, OK.  You’ll explore Earth Sciences, take part in a guided tour, learn about curriculum development components, do hands-on exploration of the site, and chat with scientists over a catered lunch on-site. 

Curriculum options, stipend, and lunch are included! Travel costs are reimbursed by OU. 

More about the Deep Dust project:

The University of Oklahoma is leading an expedition to recover more than 6,000 feet of continuous rock core from Oklahoma’s Anadarko Basin, the thickest accumulation of sedimentary rock on the North American continent. These samples will reveal one of the world’s most complete records of the Permian Period, helping scientists better understand Earth’s past and the forces that continue to shape our future.

The Deep Dust Project is led by OU geoscientist Dr. Lynn Soreghan and brings together researchers from across the United States, Japan and Europe alongside internationally recognized drilling engineers and coring professionals. Supported by leading scientific organizations and industry experts, the project represents years of planning and collaboration to make this technically ambitious undertaking possible.

Why Deep Dust Matters:

Nearly 300 million years ago, Earth experienced dramatic changes unlike anything seen before or since.

Continents merged to form the supercontinent Pangea. Massive climate shifts transformed landscapes around the globe. Life flourished and later endured the largest mass extinction in Earth’s history.

Today, those ancient stories remain preserved beneath Oklahoma! By recovering continuous core from the Anadarko Basin, researchers will study an unparalleled archive of Earth’s history.

We’ll be sharing curriculum materials to accompany your visit to the Deep Dust drill site to bring back to your classrooms!

Location Details:

  • Take the Canute exit off of I-40

  • Drive directly South for 6 miles

  • Look for the tall thing sticking up out of the ground.
    You’ll see the rig way before you arrive at it!

  • Parking is plentiful on site
